Not enjoying GMail's latest features? Here's how

Do you keep reading about all the cool features that keep being added to GMail (multiple From addresses, RSS feeds, chat, etc…) and you’re not seeing them on your account?

We deploy features to GMail progressively, so it’s possible that either your country is not supported yet, or the server which hosts your account hasn’t received the latest features.

Without any guarantees, here are two tips that will make sure you will receive these new features as soon as they are available (and if you’re lucky, they will start working right away):

  • If you are using an https connection to access GMail, remove the ‘s’ (i.e. the address should read “http://mail.google.com”).  Eventually, all the new services will support https, but they typically don’t initially.

  • Make sure your language (Settings / General) is set to “English (US”).

Now you can enjoy living on the bleeding edge of email.

Hm, I'm already viewing from http:// and using English (US) for display. Still can't get the Gmail account I've had the longest to display the new Chat feature. Got it another account, though, for experimentation. Just would like to roll things along. Thanks for the help though, looking forward to any other tips you might have. http://thegooglist.blogsp0t.com

Whenever I remove the s, it comes back again (I get redirected).

Sadly this hasn't worked for me either. I'd love to be able to use the new chat feature. I suppose I'll just have to be patient...

Embedding Google Talk inside Google Mail is going to create a real problem for some people. I work for a bank where all external IM is forbidden. We can only go through auditable internal IM applications. This is enforced by a proxy server that blocks access to all known IM servers including MSN Messenger, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL, Google Talk, Jabber, etc. If the Compliance nazis hear that we can access Google Talk from Google Mail, they will block Google Mail too. I don't suppose there's much hope in asking, but is there any way we can have a special version of Google Mail _without_ access to Google Talk?

New labels looks ugly, very annoying popup window on every contact. Hm, I think this is a worse GMail new feature :(

Thanks Cedric, I was looking out for the vacation responder and thanks to this post I now have no reason to complain about gmail. ;)

Holy google-features Batman! The 'English (US)' trick works a charm! I just changed mine fron 'English (UK)' and literally as soon as I hit 'Save' I had all the brand-spanking new stuff! Cheers for the useful info...
