No more Java project ideas!

I gave up.  I finally closed the comments on this Java Projects entry that kept receiving comments from Indian students who don't bother reading what they are commenting on.  I think there are more than two hundred (200!) comments from students asking me for project ideas by now.  I didn't close the comments initially because I wanted to see how far the insanity could go...  Well, very far it seems, and no end in sight.

Updating the entry to point visitors to a clarification didn't change anything:  the requests for project ideas kept coming at the pace of about one per day, so I decided to put an end to it.

Except that...  my Movable Type installation is using Berkeley DB, and there is no way to close comments or trackbacks for past entries (or do any kind of batch operation for that matter).  The only way was to move it over to MySQL, which ended up being surprisingly easy.

The first thing to do is to download Movable Type 3, which contains a very handy mt-db2sql.cgi script.  That's all you need from Movable Type 3 and this script works on Movable Type 2 (the one I'm using).  All you need to do is put this script in your installation directory and follow the instructions.  The script took a few minutes to run (I have over three hundred entries by now, several thousand comments and the script transfers everything, including the logs, which I couldn't care less for) but it completed successfully and after that, I was migrated.  As simple as that.

My MT-BlackList installation was disabled during the process, but reactivating it was a simple matter of going to the main page and checking a box.

I connected manually to the MySQL database to double check and everything worked like a charm.  The schemas are very intuitive and a few SELECT, UPDATE and WHERE later, I had closed the comments for the offending entry and also the trackbacks for all my past entries (the latest trend used by spammers, which shows at least that CAPTCHA's are working fine).

Sorry, India, you'll have to look somewhere else for Java projects.

Comments

This is really funny. I somehow cant believe that these comments are real, because how crazy are these guys? Using someone else blog commenting function to use it like a university bulletin board.

Cedric, do your working-country a favor and send that blog entry with all the comments to IBM or other outsourcing maniacs. Perhaps they keep some more jobs in the US :) Of course i dont want to bash indian IT students here, i assume these 150 guys are the exception from the other intelligent people studying IT there.

I particularly liked the one about the assasinated Nigerian guy with 80 million java project names secretly locking in a box.

Very clever.

Can't you leave it open? Perhaps some self aware AI would evolve out of the comments?

Posted by: Michael at July 26, 2005 07:20 PM

Dear sendhilkumarun.E,

It is very clear that you're a fake. First of all, your writing has capitals in the right places. Second, Indian people do not know "you". They only use "u". Also, you wrote "I". Indians do not refer to themselves as "I", they do it with "i".

Your grammar and diction, however, are quite close. I suggest you work on your "u" and "i".

Good luck to you,
Avid

how dare u ppl made fun of India!

we invented d number 0,
our vedic math wuz beyond any of this calculus shit,
english was derived from Hindi,
mandarin was derived from Tamil,
japanese was derived from Hindi,
italian, french, spanish, and even esperanto all came from the same origin: Hindi!

We invented:
fire, wheel, the steam engine, and don't forget that Einstein discovered the theory of relativity in Bombay!

Newton was hit by an indian apple.

Also, did you know that Stephen Hawking's grandfather was indian?

And guess who invented the internet...

Cedric & All,

I would like to share some of my opinions regarding these posts by Indian students. I am not trying to justify their behaviour but i just wanted to shed some light on their mindsets so that they are not overly insulted and that too very arrogantly in some of the posts.

Some of the points to note about some of the Indian engineering students are

1. Most of the Indian enginnering students are poor or middleclass
2. Most of them don't own a computer at home (forget about Internet connection)
3. Not much Internet exposure to the students
4. Most colleges will have Internet connections only in some select machines which can be used only on time sharing basis
5. If they need to browse, they have to go to a browsing center and rent it on a hourly basis and it has a pathetic Internet connection.
6. And the most important point is, English is NOT their native language. They probably know 3 to 4 Indian languages and communication happens mostly in these languages. English is mainly limited to university text books and for writing exams

Given these situations, a student goes to browsing center for checking mails and some random site browsing through Google or thru any search engine. Now when they want to search something specific like "project titles" they simply google it and find sites that they feel relevant and post these queries. They simply don't bother to read those hundreds of posts since they are in a browsing center/home/college with a slow internet connection and they have a limited time and they also have to visit as much site as possible within that stipulated time.

I am not generalizing this for the entire Indian engineerig students I am talking about most of the engineering colleges in non-metropolitcan cities. Once they are out of the college and when they join a software company, they quickly tend to learn all the skillsets required for their job. I myself have come from a similar background and shared similar mindset.

So my point is instead of insulting these people please guide them when they do something wrong. Cedric, you could have updated your post with a simple statememt saying "I don't provide project titles please go else where". Instead you waited for all the comments and had fun!! Even your clarification "point visitors to a clarification" URL was directed towards IT community to share your fun for a greater audience

thanks
Satish

Posted by: Satish at July 28, 2005 01:39 AM

Satish,

I think you're not being very fair with me. First of all, not only did I update the original entry to make it clear I wasn't sending any project idea, I actually wrote a second entry (linked from the first one) to make this even clearer. Second, I once exchanged extended emails with one of these people and the first question I asked him was how he found my blog entry. He said through a Google search, but I was unable to replicate a search that would produce my blog entry and he never told me exactly how to do it.

I would also like to point out that I have never said any single disparaging thing about these students or even Indians for that matter. I have the utmost respect for Indian programmers (I work with quite a few of them on a daily basis) and what makes this episode funny is not that these comments are coming from Indians but that they exist at all. I couldn't care less about the race or nationality of who posted them.

Your attempt to explain their behavior is most welcome and sheds some light on what is going on, but I would appreciate it if you could refrain from attacking me and putting words in my mouth.

This episode is *funny*. That's it. There is really nothing more to it and certainly no reason to become so defensive.

Finally, for anyone interested in these matters, I strongly recommend reading "The World is Flat", by Thomas Friedmann, which is one of the most enlightening books on the subject I have read in a decade.

Posted by: Cedric at July 28, 2005 07:06 AM

Satish,

Cedric clearly pointed out that that was not the place for asking for Java projects. And like Cedric pointed out, that was funny. It's not because of the fact that they are Indians. If the same behavior is exhibited by Okinawans, people will laugh at Okinawans as well.

This same behaviour was exhibited in _the_ top RFE for Java, where a bunch of Chinese Java programmers using their numbers to ask for JDK documentation to be translated into Chinese.

http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4977599

Try counting the number of posts containing a single word "hope" in that one. Or silly arguments like "It's very important for our Chinese".

You can't really blame people for at the very least laughing at you for this kind of behavior. It just begs being laughed at.

The fact that you've got an Indian claiming about the superiority of Vedic calculus or that you guys invented the number 0 or English is derived from Hindi doesn't help the image, honestly.

Posted by: avid at July 28, 2005 10:13 PM

Oh, by the vedic calculus, I was referring to a comment made by this guy on this page:

http://beust.com/weblog/archives/000213.html

(search for vedic math). I'm not referring to the "Indians invented the internet" comment above on this page, which is obviously a joke (I hope).

Yeah, sure. Invent 0, invent 1, whatever. That was thousands of years ago. Please get over it already.

Instead, reading what a person says next time before adding one irrelevant reply after another would do better for your reputation.

I'm Chinese. I expect to be treated and regarded based on my conducts alone. I don't go around saying that some distant ancestors of mine invented paper or rockets and expect people not to laugh at me when I do dumb things.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this is nothing but “spam”.
You should treat this same way as you treat email spam.
No need to “post” another stupid meaningless blog about it and stir up a controversy.

Note: A word of advice, it’s better if you don’t generalize things.

Here's a nice project idea:

A web-based project idea dispenser.

Build a web page that produces original academic project titles, based on personal preferences of each user and some randomness.
The page will provide the user with a number of technologies which can choosen and ranked according to his/her preference. The webapp then takes the user's input and generates a project title focused on those preferences. Each project title dispensed must be stored in a database to prevent duplicate titles from being dispensed.

Profit can be achieved by adding Google Ads to the page, and requesting that the user clicks on the most relevant ad before being given the title.

This project will require web programming, database, and NLP skills.

> most relevant ad before being given the title.

Google explicitly prohibits encouraging third parties to click.

@Cedric don't you have a "delete comment" function in your MT? I would've hated if someone was crapping my blog with the spam like these few above.

DISCLAIMER: None of the above is to insult Indians or whomever.

Posted by: visalakshi at March 2, 2006 12:32 AM

Jesus. This is one of the most craziest things i've run into online.

My last 10 minutes have been spent, first laughing that these "I need project plz, i am thanking you" people are my countrymen and then a feeling of sadness.

Pathetic.

Use your brains, think of a project, code a simpler version or a simulator in a few days as a demonstrator (after all, everyone asking for a project should know GUI programming, right), document what you have and that's it. That's your project.

One which you can show to others with some pride. It's yours.

A word of advice: In job placements at least, it doesnt matter what you call your project or what you did, HOW you did what you did is what matters. Think of something relevent to the target company's profile and do that.

And for heaven's sake, develop a spine and start doing your own thinking.

Hi pavithra,

I can suggest you some project titles, so that you can experience your own. It will be better for your career too. In java you can develop any applications like CD Store, that can be used in the shops. You can try for some Banking applications. If you really want some real time application & if you are good in C programming you can design a compiler with limited set of instructions. I think this might give you an idea, if u r not clear just reply clearly so that i try to help you more.

well u might find a blog on the net by a indian programmer doing the same thing, having the same problem(people asking him for projects) so the issuse is not about "INDIAN STUDENTS ASKING FOR STUFF" rather is "STUPID students asking for stuff"... well i aint saying that our nation is perfect....but it aint far behind......if u want to know the state of affairs of ur own nations students, try getting to know the queries Call centes(BPOs) here get for objects from alarm clocks to computers to microwaves....

i know its funny and laughable, ah hell i was laughing my guts out when i read it, but the thing that got to me is ppl(coz of u) were laughing at an INDIANS STUDENT rather than a STUPID STUDENT.....

well if we r as bad as u think, then u guys r bigger nuts to have set up shop here......

no programmer who searches for his/her final project on google is worth anyones time

so at the risk of sounding like the UN
i take it upon myself to rest this case

and by the way indians rule..no second thoughts.u guys know it better than we do,
we do have a few idiots...200 in probably 4lac(for u that would be .4 million) students using net(google)....

i suggest u broaden ur point of view

Hello sir
This company is exactly what i am looking for and at the same time I am confident that I have skills your company need.

I would like to associate myself with your company through off campus. Now I wish to do six month project training (tentative Jan 2007 -- June 2007) in MCA 6th semester part of MCA degree, in your company.

I have done BSc( Comp Science Hons) and now pursuing MCA so i have very good command over programming languages and posses IT skills. I have designed two software also. One is in graduation and another one is in MCA IV semester. Doing these kind of task I have gained practical knowledge of various stages of SDLC. Since I am MCA student so I can put my IT skills to practical use as per your company requirement.

Your company interests me greatly as an opportunity to build on my skills and develop career in my chosen field.

Iam available for interview for training program at anytime and i would like the opportunity to demonstrate that we have the necessary qualities.

give me reply as soon as possible...

OK.
Starting with the guy who said Indians use 'i' instead of 'I' and 'u' instead of 'U'. I didn't know this pathetic blog required meticulous assessment of every individual's text so it confirms to the norms of English language. Let us begin by addressing you as a "Racist F*ck!" now 'i' hope that is properly formed. Dear racist fu*k I don't know what kind of Indians you run into everyday but please hope you never run into me. We maybe here for project ideas but not to get you to sign over your property and assets. Also I would like to state that 'WE' Indians are not the ones whose language is referred to as SLANG! in your very own English dictionary. As of your measly life I am intrigued by the notion that my left cerebral hemisphere which says you might have resorted to commit suicide unable to bear your own life, is in conflict with the right cerebral hemisphere which thinks you are probably too old and scared to do that.

and now i hope you get da point dude! i gonna type this way no matter whos dads having a rocket fired out of his bumhole besides if you thought that was worse.. it is just starting son it keeps getting better so wat is ur problem do you have chronic hemorrhoids which inhibit you from showing hospitality to foreigners or is it xenophobia ooo am i using too many words maan ok i wont use any from now on so please no matter what you think i said and did till now kindly do not think of it much and consider my plea to think of all possible project ideas type them into your micro-shaft document print them on an a4 size paper fold them up in a convenient fashion and push them up your rear side

kthnxbye

Hey guys, i don't understand why most of you have got drifted by the word "Indian". Let us not forget that we are first humans. By saying this i am not trying to console Cedric. Even i am an Indian. Today at my workplace even i received a query on project ideas. I have received the query from some Indian students. I was surprised when i received this query because the first thought that came to my mind was: Can’t their superiors help the students with such a small problem. Well, without giving much thought, I started browsing the web to find some projects. And I found the following links which contain either web applications, problem statement of projects or may be some full –fledge projects:

Standalone project that can be converted to web-based:
http://seam.cs.umd.edu/Forms/TheProject/ProblemStatement.html

Servlet-based shopping cart
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/tutorial/1_3-fcs/doc/Servlets3.html#65912

JSP-based shopping cart
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/tutorial/1_3-fcs/doc/JSPIntro3.html

MVC-based shopping cart
http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-1999/jw-12-ssj-jspmvc.html

A DVD-based online shopping cart:
http://www.mvcvideodvd.com/store/cart.cfm

Online pizza ordering system using JSF:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/04-mar/o24dev_jsf.html

Project list:
http://mindprod.com/projects/projects.html

Non-web based projects:
http://www.providence.edu/mcs/studentprojects.htm

Good Student projects:
http://www.dotnetspider.com

However, there are several books which do contain complete projects. One such publisher is SkillSoft. Skillsoft publishes an InstantCode series. Their InstantCode series books contain complete project source code with explanation.

Guys do refer books and start exploring the Internet and you will never have to ask for help to others.

Who ever makes fun of each doesn't know that they are the most funny and disgusting person on this forum.
Get a life people.
Let somebody get some help in Java or PHP by whatever means they are confortable with. They are not asking you by waking you up during your sleep.
If you cant help anything, please dont disturb them with your disgusting messages.
Those who blames Indian/Chineese students dont know that all these IT stuff are coming from Indian brains afterall.
Get over it loosers, without posting stupid ideas.
Take care all folks.

Welcome to Indian Insanity ... :)

I completely sympathize with you.
Unfortunately here in India, most of us programmers are those who don't understand western etiquettes.

If you possess something, it's considered natural to ask of you to lend it, as long as the one who asks for it is polite.

My experience at first hand. It could get frustrating at times and I am not saying that we will learn modern etiquettes but only that eventually, the world would have to cope with us ...

:)

I PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN

So, Whats that u all f__kin people saying.... Here I'm to defend u ALL. Even 1 Indian is enough to beat u ALL...

You call yourself computer technitions...huh... Shame on you all. Wanna compare urself.... Then try n beat the one above u all....

You say most of the Indians posting are fools.... I say beat me and then talk... Your IT industry has no base without we INDIANS... Most of the MS students in US are Indians coz their own students have no brains to carry forward the technology... Most of them are engaged in Business after their BS and the rest destroy their lives in drugs & s_x... We get more GPA than u all even if we study the last day and u all crash urselves in books the whole semester...

And Its simply not like it that 200 out 4Lac are fools.... I have made a fool 195 out 200 of u people... I have consulted u people to where to buy stuff in US and earned money from u fools.... staying here in INDIA...

I alone will be heavy for u all freaks out there...

Lets talk and prove urself as a Technition.... I CHALLENGE U ALL....

Now u know what an INDIAN can do...

Well, quite a few Indians are internetically stupid, I admit. God knows I've dealt with my share (case in point - jalife.net/2005/06/01/aieee-results-are-out) (seems I can't add links)
This doesn't how ever mean that all of them are like that. Contrary to what Avid said, some Indians do know how to type in English with proper capitalisation using perfect grammar (case in point - me; yes, I'm Indian :p)

Trust me, I've seen my share of random comments on my site. What started of as me telling that I got my results to an exam ended up as people mistaking me as a guru for admission news. One person even told me that the page was put up for that purpose! I wonder if me having helped a few of those people early on added to the craziness. Doesn't matter now anyway.

As Cedric said, this whole thing seems *funny*. I sure did have a good time reading this. Thanks for the laugh :P
