January 08, 2006Use Print to read annoying web pagesOne thing that really irks me is articles that are split into multiple parts and that force you to click Next every time you are ready to read more. Here is an example. Whenever I encounter such an article, I immediately search for a Print button, and most of the time, it takes you to a page that not only contains the entirety of the article, but also removes all the ads and other clutter from it. Of course, then you get the _really_ annoying articles where the "Print" button only shows the current page. I don't have an example, because when I come across those, I don't tend to go back. Posted by: Robert at January 8, 2006 08:33 PMhi cedric, I've been doing the same for many years although I feel kinda guilty to advocate the same to friends/colleagues since the publisher is losing ad realestate(dollars) by this act. BR, I heard conspiracy theories that it is to do with page hit counters, page impressions per visit etc... It is really annoying. www.smh.com.au has started doing it, and I find I am reading it less know as I only bother with half an article. Posted by: Michael Neale at January 8, 2006 09:17 PM+1 Unfortunately not all sites provide such "Print" functionality :( It is also very convinient to upload printed version of articles to my palm for later reading. Posted by: Konstantin at January 9, 2006 02:38 AMThe articels on e.g. german "zeit.de" are split over several pages, but they offer to read the complete article on one page; without a need to (ab)use the print function. Posted by: Daniel at January 9, 2006 07:03 AM*me too* What also irritates the hell out of me is *$ RSS/Atom feeds that don't include the whole entry. Gah!! Posted by: Tom Hawtin at January 9, 2006 07:15 AMI use aardvark when I want to clean up a page before reading or printing: http://karmatics.com/aardvark/ Posted by: Aurélien at January 9, 2006 09:58 PMI'm glad to see that the Mac has all the same annoying issues as Windows. Posted by: Sony Mathew at January 10, 2006 10:30 AMOui ! Comme tu as raison Cedric ! Oh ya. I hate those multiple page articles where one page contains only one paragraph. I have been using the print format for quite some time. Also, the fact that opera remembers all the opened pages when I restart the browser/machine means I almost never miss out on any opened article. Posted by: Gaurav Chawla at January 12, 2006 02:14 PM
