July 26, 2005No more Java project ideas!I gave up. I finally closed the comments on this Java Projects entry that kept receiving comments from Indian students who don't bother reading what they are commenting on. I think there are more than two hundred (200!) comments from students asking me for project ideas by now. I didn't close the comments initially because I wanted to see how far the insanity could go... Well, very far it seems, and no end in sight. Updating the entry to point visitors to a clarification didn't change anything: the requests for project ideas kept coming at the pace of about one per day, so I decided to put an end to it. Except that... my Movable Type installation is using Berkeley DB, and there is no way to close comments or trackbacks for past entries (or do any kind of batch operation for that matter). The only way was to move it over to MySQL, which ended up being surprisingly easy. The first thing to do is to download Movable Type 3, which contains a very handy mt-db2sql.cgi script. That's all you need from Movable Type 3 and this script works on Movable Type 2 (the one I'm using). All you need to do is put this script in your installation directory and follow the instructions. The script took a few minutes to run (I have over three hundred entries by now, several thousand comments and the script transfers everything, including the logs, which I couldn't care less for) but it completed successfully and after that, I was migrated. As simple as that. My MT-BlackList installation was disabled during the process, but reactivating it was a simple matter of going to the main page and checking a box. I connected manually to the MySQL database to double check and everything worked like a charm. The schemas are very intuitive and a few SELECT, UPDATE and WHERE later, I had closed the comments for the offending entry and also the trackbacks for all my past entries (the latest trend used by spammers, which shows at least that CAPTCHA's are working fine). Sorry, India, you'll have to look somewhere else for Java projects. Posted by cedric at July 26, 2005 04:11 PM Comments
This is really funny. I somehow cant believe that these comments are real, because how crazy are these guys? Using someone else blog commenting function to use it like a university bulletin board. Cedric, do your working-country a favor and send that blog entry with all the comments to IBM or other outsourcing maniacs. Perhaps they keep some more jobs in the US :) Of course i dont want to bash indian IT students here, i assume these 150 guys are the exception from the other intelligent people studying IT there. I particularly liked the one about the assasinated Nigerian guy with 80 million java project names secretly locking in a box. Very clever. Can't you leave it open? Perhaps some self aware AI would evolve out of the comments? Posted by: Michael at July 26, 2005 07:20 PMDear sendhilkumarun.E, It is very clear that you're a fake. First of all, your writing has capitals in the right places. Second, Indian people do not know "you". They only use "u". Also, you wrote "I". Indians do not refer to themselves as "I", they do it with "i". Your grammar and diction, however, are quite close. I suggest you work on your "u" and "i". Good luck to you, F desyatke! Posted by: Subramaniyamrameshsureshusatyavikasshasharmabobakittyfuck at July 27, 2005 06:14 PMhello sir I am in final year computer science engg. hello sir I am in final year computer science engg. Cedric & All, I would like to share some of my opinions regarding these posts by Indian students. I am not trying to justify their behaviour but i just wanted to shed some light on their mindsets so that they are not overly insulted and that too very arrogantly in some of the posts. Some of the points to note about some of the Indian engineering students are 1. Most of the Indian enginnering students are poor or middleclass Given these situations, a student goes to browsing center for checking mails and some random site browsing through Google or thru any search engine. Now when they want to search something specific like "project titles" they simply google it and find sites that they feel relevant and post these queries. They simply don't bother to read those hundreds of posts since they are in a browsing center/home/college with a slow internet connection and they have a limited time and they also have to visit as much site as possible within that stipulated time. I am not generalizing this for the entire Indian engineerig students I am talking about most of the engineering colleges in non-metropolitcan cities. Once they are out of the college and when they join a software company, they quickly tend to learn all the skillsets required for their job. I myself have come from a similar background and shared similar mindset. So my point is instead of insulting these people please guide them when they do something wrong. Cedric, you could have updated your post with a simple statememt saying "I don't provide project titles please go else where". Instead you waited for all the comments and had fun!! Even your clarification "point visitors to a clarification" URL was directed towards IT community to share your fun for a greater audience thanks Satish, I think you're not being very fair with me. First of all, not only did I update the original entry to make it clear I wasn't sending any project idea, I actually wrote a second entry (linked from the first one) to make this even clearer. Second, I once exchanged extended emails with one of these people and the first question I asked him was how he found my blog entry. He said through a Google search, but I was unable to replicate a search that would produce my blog entry and he never told me exactly how to do it. I would also like to point out that I have never said any single disparaging thing about these students or even Indians for that matter. I have the utmost respect for Indian programmers (I work with quite a few of them on a daily basis) and what makes this episode funny is not that these comments are coming from Indians but that they exist at all. I couldn't care less about the race or nationality of who posted them. Your attempt to explain their behavior is most welcome and sheds some light on what is going on, but I would appreciate it if you could refrain from attacking me and putting words in my mouth. This episode is *funny*. That's it. There is really nothing more to it and certainly no reason to become so defensive. Finally, for anyone interested in these matters, I strongly recommend reading "The World is Flat", by Thomas Friedmann, which is one of the most enlightening books on the subject I have read in a decade. Satish, Cedric clearly pointed out that that was not the place for asking for Java projects. And like Cedric pointed out, that was funny. It's not because of the fact that they are Indians. If the same behavior is exhibited by Okinawans, people will laugh at Okinawans as well. This same behaviour was exhibited in _the_ top RFE for Java, where a bunch of Chinese Java programmers using their numbers to ask for JDK documentation to be translated into Chinese. http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4977599 Try counting the number of posts containing a single word "hope" in that one. Or silly arguments like "It's very important for our Chinese". You can't really blame people for at the very least laughing at you for this kind of behavior. It just begs being laughed at. The fact that you've got an Indian claiming about the superiority of Vedic calculus or that you guys invented the number 0 or English is derived from Hindi doesn't help the image, honestly. Posted by: avid at July 28, 2005 10:13 PMOh, by the vedic calculus, I was referring to a comment made by this guy on this page: http://beust.com/weblog/archives/000213.html (search for vedic math). I'm not referring to the "Indians invented the internet" comment above on this page, which is obviously a joke (I hope). Posted by: avid at July 28, 2005 10:17 PM"The world is flat", by Thomas Friedmannnnn? Here's a decent review of the book: http://newyorkpress.com/18/16/news&columns/taibbi.cfm Enjoy :) Peace. Note: A word of advice, it’s better if you don’t generalize things. Here's a nice project idea: A web-based project idea dispenser. Build a web page that produces original academic project titles, based on personal preferences of each user and some randomness. Profit can be achieved by adding Google Ads to the page, and requesting that the user clicks on the most relevant ad before being given the title. This project will require web programming, database, and NLP skills. Posted by: siyam at February 28, 2006 09:36 PMi need some java project titles. Posted by: visalakshi at March 2, 2006 12:32 AMJesus. This is one of the most craziest things i've run into online. My last 10 minutes have been spent, first laughing that these "I need project plz, i am thanking you" people are my countrymen and then a feeling of sadness. Pathetic. Use your brains, think of a project, code a simpler version or a simulator in a few days as a demonstrator (after all, everyone asking for a project should know GUI programming, right), document what you have and that's it. That's your project. One which you can show to others with some pride. It's yours. A word of advice: In job placements at least, it doesnt matter what you call your project or what you did, HOW you did what you did is what matters. Think of something relevent to the target company's profile and do that. And for heaven's sake, develop a spine and start doing your own thinking.
sir, sir, Hi pavithra, I can suggest you some project titles, so that you can experience your own. It will be better for your career too. In java you can develop any applications like CD Store, that can be used in the shops. You can try for some Banking applications. If you really want some real time application & if you are good in C programming you can design a compiler with limited set of instructions. I think this might give you an idea, if u r not clear just reply clearly so that i try to help you more. Posted by: Indhu at March 18, 2008 08:34 AMi hv developed a project "online shopping" 4 my final yr mca.somehow its not up to the mark. please send me titles of java,c or c++ projects send me on sasbsediffrent@yahoo.com Posted by: at June 3, 2008 05:35 AMWell, quite a few Indians are internetically stupid, I admit. God knows I've dealt with my share (case in point - jalife.net/2005/06/01/aieee-results-are-out) (seems I can't add links) Trust me, I've seen my share of random comments on my site. What started of as me telling that I got my results to an exam ended up as people mistaking me as a guru for admission news. One person even told me that the page was put up for that purpose! I wonder if me having helped a few of those people early on added to the craziness. Doesn't matter now anyway. As Cedric said, this whole thing seems *funny*. I sure did have a good time reading this. Thanks for the laugh :P Posted by: John Anderton at June 20, 2008 10:47 AMI am smitha, i have to do a project as i am in third year of diploma using java as front end and sql as back end. pls give me some ideas concerned on the projects if possible send me screen shots also.
