July 23, 2004Anonymous nonsenseWhat is up with this insistence of certain bloggers to require non-anonymous commenters? I was once again reminded of this curious obsession while reading Geert's comment on his own blog: No, I delete posts from "No one" <noone@email.com>. If you can't be troubled to at least make yourself look human, I can't be troubled to give you an answer. but he's certainly not the only offender. It's very simple: either you allow people to post with a default (e.g. noone@email.com) email address, or you just don't let them post in the first place. Letting them post and then deleting their post just because they didn't feel the need to type a bogus email address is just plain ridiculous, and a waste of time both for you and for the poster. Especially if you didn't even bother spelling out the rules you follow to decide whether a comment is worthy of your blog or not. I actually even question the attitude in the first place. Tell people that they need to submit a real name and not an anonymous one and they will either stop posting comments on your blog or sign them John Smith. And what have you gained, really? Stop judging people on their identities to avoid addressing what they write. This is the Internet. Deal with it. Update: the original poster addressed this very point by posting his next comment under Geert's own identity. I rest my case :-) Posted by cedric at July 23, 2004 02:06 PMComments
True indeed! Posted by: no two at July 22, 2004 03:33 PMRight on! It's pathetic that people feel that they can foist their own crap on countless victims, while denying that very same pleasure to everyone else. Hell, if I required real names, I doubt I'd get a single comment on bileblog. The importance should be on what is said, not on who said it. Posted by: Hani Suleiman at July 22, 2004 04:05 PMToo much paranoia. This reminds of an outlandish yet funny RolfTollerudism: They're short of frisking for weapons at the entrance to Java events :-) Following my referrers... The only people that comment anonymously are the assholes. They leave ignorant, abusive, condescending flames whose only purpose is to belittle someone (usually me) but they don't have the backbone to actually say these things with their name on it. Some people foster that sort of low-brow cowardly readership (look a couple comments above) and thrive on the spineless idiots out there, but I have no use for them. I'll never understand what gives people the idea that they have the right to just drop whatever load of shit they feel like in my comments bin. Total f*cking losers, all of them. I stand by every word I've ever written. It's all there, with my name and face on it. I don't back down, I don't shrug the responsibility of my words or deeds. I expect the same from the people who comment on my site. It's simple really. My weblog is like my house. If you're a guest, act accordingly. I really truly despise the spineless assholes out there that leave anonymous comments. They're less than human, really. I'd put them down like dogs if I could. -Russ Thanks for commenting about my right not to use my real name. I too stand by every word I've ever written. I just don't want my name attached. Since Russ puts his name on everything he writes, I guarantee that if he is looking for a job, I'd never hire him in a million years. I don't care care if he is the most qualified (which is unlikely). I'd never hire someone who says stuff like this: "I really truly despise the spineless assholes out there that leave anonymous comments. They're less than human, really. I'd put them down like dogs if I could." The funny thing is that he doesn't realize how insecure he is to let anonymous people piss him off so much. :) Posted by: No one at July 22, 2004 06:52 PMWhat the hell do you have against dogs, Russ ?! Posted by: Evgeny Goldin at July 22, 2004 07:00 PMSee what I mean about "no one"? Proves my point entirely. He says "I'd never hired someone... etc. etc." Yeah, like this guy is a high-powered executive somewhere. Please, you're a moron (and I'll be the one doing the hiring now, thanks). And I'm insecure... That may be the case (aren't we all), but who the hell does this guy think he is to say it like I have problems? Answer: An anonymous asshole. Really, this guy is so worried about how his words will come back and affect his corporate chances some day, that he hides behind anonymity and somehow find ways of justifying it. "I stand behind my words." What a f ucking hypocrite. Please. You're a coward, "no one". Look yourself in the mirror ad admit it. F ucking loser. -Russ Posted by: Russ at July 22, 2004 07:56 PMRuss I am a different "no-one". We all say things "anonymously" all the time. Other people overhear our conversations and don't know who we are. Maybe you should tatoo your name and id number on your forehead. Meanwhile the rest of us will get along nicely saying whatever we like without having to necessarily identify ourselves. Deal with it. Posted by: The REAL Russel Beattie at July 22, 2004 08:05 PM"They leave ignorant, abusive, condescending flames whose only purpose is to belittle someone[...]" So, that comment of yours was really far from an ignorant, abusive and condescending frame whose only purpose was to belittle the amonymous posters? Or is it that because there's your name at the end of the comment then it's ok? Posted by: at July 22, 2004 08:08 PMI'm getting d amn tired of you f ucking losers commenting on my posts. You are are s hit heads and can go to h ell. Wow, I don't know what pissed off Russ, but if you read my posts and read his posts, I think you'll see that us anonymous posters are much more well behaved. :) Posted by: No one at July 22, 2004 08:31 PM
Dear Idiots: Yes there's nothing I can do about anonymous postings (were you trying to prove something?). That doesn't mean I accept them. And yes, I get to say whatever abusive thing I want, because unlike you f uckwits, I *am* leaving my name. Therefore what I says has more validity and weight, whether you like it or not. (And by the way, f uck is the only word filtered, moron). -Russ Posted by: Russ at July 22, 2004 08:50 PMIronically, you just left an "ignorant, abusive, condescending flame" on Cedric's blog. Apparently, not only anonymous commentators act like ignorant jackasses in someone else's blog, and you just proved it. And who fosters the "low-brow, cowardly readership"? You insult anyone who disagrees with you on your blog and blows your narcissistic bubble, whether they use their real names or not. Remember how you abused the Hibernate folks? This is why your current commentators devolved into a bunch of yes-men and back-patting lackeys. Talk about obedient, demure, groveling little doggies. Dare they debunk your bullshit, you'd ravage them with obscenities and vulgarities, like a childish sore loser. I wonder what kind of lobotomized audience could tolerate your mind-numbing banalities. Hani: On with the interview! On second thought, the dude is hopelessly bent of out shape already. Allow me to get some clarification. Personal abuse that's got a name on it is better than anonymous comments that actually make a point? Therefore you believe that Identity trumps Consideration, Logic, and Reason - no matter the circumstance? Because that is what you are arguing; a man's name and reputation is more important than the content of his argument. Posted by: Socrates at July 22, 2004 09:08 PMSo Russ... by your logic with the comment "I *am* leaving my name. Therefore what I says has more validity and weight.." If i were to write something stating that i had pioneered Digital Video Recording devices... it would be more valid then if i signed the letter anonymously? Just because you put your name on something doesn't make it more valid. You can spew a bunch of crap whether you are signing off on it or not. You have no idea who i am but even if you did you wouldn't know if what i was saying was valid or not. Especially if i was only spewing out insults and opinions (like yourself). Posted by: Every one at July 22, 2004 10:40 PMVery simple, it's a matter of decent behaviour. Just like on IRC you know people by their nick. Sure anybody could use their nickname, but I hardly talk to all the random nicks that message me in private. When I have someone on the phone, I don't start a conversation without asking who he is, the guy could be lying too. When I receive emails, the addresses could be spoofed too. If you blatently refuse to tell who you are, why the hell should I take the trouble of starting a conversation with you. It's not about the fact that you can disguise yourself as anyone else, since that's possible everywhere. Hell, someone could even get surgery and a wig and look like a good friend in real life. If you don't take the trouble of giving your name, it's like reading a blurp that's extracted out of nowhere without any context *and* it's disrespectful. Posted by: Geert Bevin at July 22, 2004 11:05 PMhttp://fishbowl.pastiche.org/2003/06/21/real_names_please "Real names encourage people to take a personal responsibility for their words. While I may not know who you are, someone does, and the psychological effect of tying the words to your real identity remains." Posted by: Charles Miller at July 23, 2004 12:29 AMWell, Charles' approach is more rational, in that he'll delete anon comments that also say nothing, and keep negative comments that are not anonymous. Russ 'Ashcroft' Bitchie on the other hand deletes ALL negative comments, anonymous or not. It was pretty funny in that thread he had against me, where he deleted 20+ comments and even said he's sitting there tailing logs to ensure he gets them as they happen (and half of the deleted ones weren't anonymous, I'm told). There's nothing wrong with being thin-skinned, most people are. However, inciting other people and being clearly antagonistic and then falling to pieces when they (quite sensibly) respond is hypocritical and immature.
