Kinkaku-ji (also called Rokuon-jin, the Golden Pavilion) was built in 1220 as the residence of the third Shogun of Ashikaga.  The second and third floors are coved with gold-lead on Japanese lacquer while the roof is thatched with shingles.  A new coating was applied on the templein 1987 and the paintings on the ceiling were also restored.
